#silverstripe IRC Log

IRC log for 25 November 2015

All timestamps are in UTC.

[00:07:36] <BrewNaked> Good afternoon/evening/morning... anyone have a moment to field a poor noob's template scope comprehension?
 [00:08:14] <BrewNaked> field => fix
[00:12:38] <eolant> Does anyone encountered https://github.com/colymba/GridFieldBulkEditingTools/issues/110? Where exactly should I put the code to fix the problem without modifying composer's folder
[00:13:28] <BrewNaked> I have a custom template (CustomLoginForm.ss) for a login form being called via $loginForm->renderWith('CustomLoginForm'). The login form is referenced in the templates two different pages and I've been asked to have an additional icon appear on the login form for only one of the two pages.
[00:14:56] <BrewNaked> I can't seem to view/output the variables for page/title/url segment from within the context of the CustomLoginForm.ss to know when to and when not to show that extra icon.
[00:15:58] <BrewNaked> Do I have to create a second custom template and reference them separately or is there another way to determine the "parent" template from the context of the CustomLoginFrom.ss?
[00:17:36] <BrewNaked> ...or perhaps someone has a "FTFM" link for understanding template's controllers contexts when using renderWith()?
[00:20:30] * zlinux quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[00:26:56] <eolant> BrewNaked: Does $Top variable works in template?
[00:27:30] <eolant> BrewNaked: If not you can try and pass parameter in renderWith() from parent controller that includes form
 [00:28:56] <BrewNaked> Thanks eolant. $Top returns nothing.
[00:29:16] <BrewNaked> I'll try sending something additionally via the renderWith().
[00:29:45] <eolant> BrewNaked: Yeah, then parameter for renderWith is the way to go. Shouldn't be hard
[00:30:27] <helenclarko> Lol just had a friend say he had someones CV come in and they had put "Applied to enter NZ's got talent as a beatboxer". No shit, someone put that on their CV when applying for a position at his workplace. I was just like "You better accept that guy!". I dont think the guy even got accepted into NZ's got talent, he just applied lol.
 [00:31:21] * mahfuz has joined #silverstripe
 [00:31:31] <eolant> helenclarko: lol
[00:37:42] <nontgor> BrewNaked: Can do likes of $Top.ID or $Top.ClassName to confirm if exists or not (sounds like not). Also try $Parent. If using renderWith() from a controller you can pass in variables, can dig out an example if you need one
[00:43:30] <BrewNaked> Yeah... empty strings in both cases. Grabbed the Controller::curr() from the class and passed its name through as an additional parameter to renderWith(). Seems to be working as expected. Thanks for the assist all.
 [00:47:10] <nontgor> BrewNaked: :)
[01:04:48] <hailwood> eolant, Did you fix your issue?
[01:06:24] <eolant> hailwood: not yet, I don't know where to put the Extension code from this answer https://github.com/colymba/GridFieldBulkEditingTools/issues/110
[01:07:23] <hailwood> put it in mysite/code in a new file
[01:08:36] <hailwood> then just apply it like you would any other extension

[07:38:30] <wmk> Stomach, what's the big win on seeder over unclecheese's mock dataobject module?
 [07:43:20] * spronk has joined #silverstripe
[08:04:42] <Stomach> you can send the yml around with the repository
[08:04:47] <Stomach> and run it as needed
 [08:04:56] <Stomach> and it more declarative :)
 [08:07:15] * arnhoe has joined #silverstripe
[08:08:35] <wmk> Stomach, ok. but no grid extension?
 [08:08:45] <Stomach> huh?
[08:09:08] <wmk> with mock you have a "add mock objects" at gridfields
[08:09:21] <wmk> and you can fill a dataobject / page with mock data (including some crazy images)
[08:09:33] <wmk> kinda funny when you have a team page with a pig
[08:09:43] <Stomach> yeah we dont want that functionality - its only usable by developers
[08:10:02] <Stomach> we did have seeder set up for random images but when you are seeding 10,000 items it goes too slowly
 [08:10:11] <wmk> of course
[08:11:53] <wmk> so pretty much the same but another approach
[08:12:02] <wmk> thanks for the explanation Stomach
 [08:12:15] * swaiba has joined #silverstripe
[08:13:28] <Stomach> yeah basically :) tbh I dont think the guy who wrote it knew about mock data objects
[08:13:37] <Stomach> and by the time it was 90% done he showed me :D
 [08:13:50] <wmk> *G*
[08:14:49] <Stomach> but the best thing is that you can ship it with the repo, so that makes it easier than dev dependency sets etc
[08:15:01] <Stomach> even though we push all dev dependencies to some servers and not others anyway
 [08:15:23] <wmk> sounds useful
[08:15:35] <wmk> i like the populate module for some setups
[08:15:51] <wmk> with real data, e.g. a set of countries you need etc...
 [08:15:58] <Stomach> populatedefaults? yeah definitely
[08:16:06] <wmk> sometimes yml is easier to write than inserting in backend
[08:16:15] <wmk> and you can throw away the test db and install again
[08:16:34] <Stomach> yeah thats the handy thing with seeder too is that you can keep all the test data as you enter real data
[08:16:37] <Stomach> then just unseed it all
[08:16:50] <Stomach> and your real data remains
 [08:16:58] <wmk> THAT sounds cool
[08:17:09] <wmk> so there is a "seeded" flag somewhere?
[08:17:34] <Stomach> yeah in the database
 [08:17:43] <wmk> nice
[08:17:56] <Stomach> i want to change that so it keeps a record log instead so you can delete the table easily
[08:18:12] <Stomach> but if SS orm deleted unused columns it wouldnt be needed...
[08:19:30] <wmk> ok, providers look useful

 [10:11:43] <Zauberfisch> wmk: good morning
[10:11:51] <Zauberfisch> figured the newsletter thingy out
 [10:11:52] <wmk> hey Zauberfisch
 [10:11:56] <wmk> really?
 [10:12:00] <wmk> what was it?
 [10:12:07] <Zauberfisch> several issues actually
[10:12:13] <Zauberfisch> spent all night debugging it
[10:12:36] <Zauberfisch> 1: 3.2 removed default controller routes. so I had to create a new route for the message queue
 [10:13:05] <wmk> lol, http://example.com/unterkunft-hotel-gasthof-pension-ferienwohnung-ferienhaus-privatzimmer.html <- seo gone wild?
[10:14:20] <wmk> Zauberfisch, yup, the classical 3.2 "bug"
[10:14:50] <Zauberfisch> 2: server is weirdly configured, and passes the environment ($_SERVER) into sub processes created with exec(). so the cli process still had a HTTP_HOST set, and so silverstripe believed I am trying to call a cli script from the web browser and stops it
 [10:15:00] <Zauberfisch> 3: I actually can't remember the third thing right now
[10:15:48] <Zauberfisch> but it is sending emails now properly
[10:16:02] <Zauberfisch> but I found another issue: some recipiants receive the email twice
[10:16:43] <Zauberfisch> I created 155 test email adresses that all are delivered to my inbox, and 4 of the test emails received the newsletter twice
[10:17:16] <Zauberfisch> perhaps it's a problem with the query of the queue. some offset wrong by 1 or something

[12:21:48] <Zauberfisch> madmatt: default silverstripe email class => php mail method => sendmail
[12:22:00] <Zauberfisch> madmatt: but I really believe the problem to be in the newsletter module
[12:22:29] <Zauberfisch> I'll just do some debugging there and see if I can pinpoint the problem

[13:05:00] <madmatt> Zauberfisch: ah right, newsletter module I See. Yeah quite possibly. I've known sendmail to get confused before and double-send (as in, two separate EHLO's to the same mail server passing the same mail), but never figured out why.
 [13:05:24] <Zauberfisch> oh, interesting
[13:05:26] <madmatt> Figured it might have been a race condition or something, it seemed to go away when I added an artifical delay to how long things sit in queue before being processed
[13:05:43] <Zauberfisch> well, if it turns out to not be the newsletter modules fault I'll get back to you on that
[13:05:57] <madmatt> sweet, good luck figuring it out!
[13:06:31] <Mike123> guys how can i get DataObjects in the Form Template ?

 [17:53:55] <codedave> Hi Guys!
[17:54:35] <codedave> just wondering why there is no common solution to get parent ID in a DataObject ?
[17:55:33] <codedave> e.g. Team has_many Supporters => how to get TeamID within the Supporter DataObject?
[17:55:50] <codedave> but Supporter doesn't belong to Team!
 [17:55:54] * Stomach has joined #silverstripe
 [17:56:31] <codedave> I am currently using SS 3.1.17
[17:58:08] <codedave> The ID of the Parent DataObject is contained in the url and there is a workaroun to extract it, but there have to be an option how to get it in more convinient way
[17:58:27] <UndefinedOffset> codedave unless i'm miss understanding your question you could just do $myObject->ParentID
[17:58:39] <codedave> I would be very thankful for a simple solution
[17:59:38] <codedave> just give my some minutes just try this proposal
[18:03:31] <codedave> Well, this is only working for already existing Children - but how can i retrieve it if creating a new Child
 [18:04:04] * gelignite has joined #silverstripe
[18:05:13] <codedave> for SS it is somehow possible to show the has one relationship correctly , but if accessing the has one ID it is empty
 [18:06:24] <codedave> e.g. Team has_many Supporter(s) , Supporter has_one Team => if editing a Supporter $this->TeamID is set, if creating a Supporter $this->TeamID is empty!
[18:08:17] <UndefinedOffset> ya the parent relationship is only set when the item is added to the containing list (i.e a grid field's list) which only happens in the case of grid field after saving for the first time
[18:12:02] <codedave> But SS is able to generate a Field Team, where the correct name of the Team is visible, and there is even a Hidden Field with the correct TeamID!
[18:12:22] <codedave> in the Form if adding a new Supporter
